With the 2010s soon to be in the rearview mirror, we decided to look back at Big Brother seasons of the past decade. Over the next several days, we will look at the most notable breakout player from each season (in our opinion) this decade. This will mean Big Brother 12 to Big Brother 21 with Over the Top and Celebrity versions included.

First up today, we will be examining the breakout star of Big Brother 14. There were numerous options to choose from this season.  Like Big Brother 13, we tried to avoid picking the returnees because they technically already had their breakout. Thankfully, the newbies this season played strong games and made it easy for us to do that. It was a tight race between Frank Eudy, Shane Meaney, and Ian Terry. In the end, we chose Ian.

Big Brother 14’s breakout star: Ian Terry

On Day 1, 4 coaches entered the Big Brother 14 house to mentor the 12 newbies. The coaches were Dan Gheesling, Britney Haynes, Janelle Pierzina, and Mike “Boogie” Malin. The coaches selected in a draft which players they wanted to mentor for the season. Ian wound up on Boogie’s team along with Jenn Arroyo and Frank.

Each week the coaches would compete in a special Coach’s Competition. The winner of this competition could either trade one of their players to one of the other coaches in exchange for a player from the other coach’s team or they could pick one of their players to be immune. The winner of the Coach’s Competition would also decide the have-nots for the week. If all of the coach’s players were evicted, then the coach would be evicted also.

On night 1 after losing the first HOH Competition, Dan had to evict one of his players. He chose to evict Jodi Rollins.

Ian became a target almost instantly after that for his quirky personality and his status as the nerd. When Boogie won the HOH Competition, he chose to save Ian. However, Ian was also made a have-not. That week, he helped take out Kara Monaco, leaving Dan with only 1 player left.

Ian was able to stay safe during weeks 2 and 3. In week 2, he watched as Willie Hantz got expelled and helped evict JoJo Spatafora. In week 3, there was no eviction as the coaches were given the opportunity to enter the game as full-fledged players, which they accepted.

In week 4, Ian founded the Quack Pack alliance with Britney Haynes, Danielle Murphree, Shane Meaney, and Dan. The Quack Pack became the dominant alliance of the season, with their success rivaling that of The Brigade. That week, the alliance claimed Janelle as their first victim, missing an opportunity to take out Frank in the process.

Ian was able to remain safe for the next 2 weeks. In week 5, Ian and the Quack Pack took out Wil Heuser. In week 6, Ian orchestrated the blindside of his coach, Mike Boogie.

Week 6 also marked the double eviction. On Day 48, Ian won his first HOH Competition of the season. Ian nominated Ashley Iocco and Frank for eviction, with the intention of evicting Frank. However, Frank won the POV to save himself that week. Ian named Joe Arvin the replacement nominee and Ashley was evicted 5-1.

In week 7, Ian’s game took a big hit. Frank nominated Dan and Danielle for eviction, with the intention of evicting his in-game rival, Dan. When Frank opened Pandora’s Box, the Golden Ball of Veto was unleashed into the house. Ian won the Golden Ball of Veto. With a regular POV up for grabs, the Quack Pack made a plan to save both Danielle and Dan with the Vetos.

However, Dan tried to win the POV Competition for himself instead of throwing it Shane or Britney. This helped Jenn win the POV instead, smashing their plans. Desperate, Dan came up with a plan that to this day lives on in Big Brother lore known as Dan’s Funeral.

He held his own funeral and claimed he was done as a player because he knew he was going home. However, Dan had one last trick up his sleeve. Dan went up to talk to Frank in the HOH room and ratted out Ian for the plan to evict Boogie among other things. With the new information having come to light, Frank and Dan put aside their differences and teamed up to target Britney, Ian’s closest ally.

At the POV ceremony, Jenn used the POV on Dan, to everyone’s shock. Then Frank nominated Britney in his place, causing jaws to drop even further. Britney was evicted in a 4-1 vote. The only vote to save her came from Ian.

Week 8 would be another double eviction. Ian won HOH on the front end of the double eviction and chose to nominate Frank and Jenn for eviction. Dan won the POV that week and chose to use it on Jenn. Ian named Joe the replacement nominee and Frank was finally evicted 3-1.

On Day 62 (on the back end of the double eviction), Dan won HOH and chose to nominate Ian and Joe, with the intention of evicting Ian. However, Ian won the POV to save himself that night. Danielle was named the replacement nominee and Joe was evicted 3-0.

Week 9 was another double eviction. Ian won his 3rd consecutive HOH on the front end of the double eviction. Ian nominated Jenn and Shane for eviction, with the intention of eviction Jenn. Shane won the POV to save himself that week and Ian named Danielle the replacement nominee. Jenn was evicted 2-0.

On Day 68, Danielle won HOH and nominated Dan and Ian, with the intention of evicting Ian. Danielle also won the POV that week and wasn’t going to use it. However, Dan convinced Danielle to use the POV on him, forcing Shane to be the replacement nominee, under the ruse that he would be the one to do the dirty work of evicting Ian.

However, Dan was secretly planning to blindside Shane as Shane was the biggest threat left in Dan’s mind. At the live eviction, Shane and Danielle were stunned as Dan voted to evict Shane.

On finale night, Ian won the final HOH of the season, marking his 4th consecutive HOH win. By default, Dan and Danielle were nominated for eviction. Knowing Dan had horribly burned multiple people, Ian chose to take Dan to the final 2, evicting Danielle in the process. Ian won the season in a 6-1 vote. Dan only received Danielle’s vote.

Frank and Shane were great players in their own right during Big Brother 14. However, Ian’s heavy handed gameplay and ability to control most of what happened during the season earns him the nod as the breakout star of Big Brother 14.
