Demi Lovato debuts on Will & Grace as Will’s surrogate, Jenny, but her lifestyle choices have Will thinking twice about putting his bun in her oven.

What’s wrong with being confident about your side hustle as a cam girl? If you ask Will, he might have something to say on that. Will & Grace welcomes guest star Demi Lovato as Will’s prospective surrogate Jenny. Upon meeting Jenny, Will’s anxiety about becoming a father reaches a fever pitch when he sees her messy apartment and unconventional career moves. But sorry, Jenny’s not sorry.

Elsewhere in the first episode of 2020, Grace and Jack pair up to sneak their way into Annie Con, a convention dedicated to the musical of the same name. Living out her lifelong dream of playing Annie, Grace poses as a famous former portrayer of the redheaded orphan, which leads to some trouble with a few of the other Annies.

Let’s recap the latest episode of Will & Grace with the gang’s five sharpest burns.

1. “Apparatus? Sounds like Jay Leno built it in his garage.”

Over breakfast, Will informs the gang that he’s tracked down a highly rated surrogate, whose “apparatus” (see: uterus) has received positive reviews. Grace knocks him for his strange use of the word apparatus, while Karen momentarily assumes Will has switched teams. Clearly, she’d had one too many Bloody Marys with brunch. Nevertheless, Will notes the high financial cost of hiring a surrogate, but insists the money doesn’t matter. He hitches a ride with Karen to meet his top choice.

2. “I thought that pianist would never get out of my face. Never said that sentence before!”

As Will and Karen have an interesting day at Jenny’s apartment (more on that later), Grace and Jack decide to crash the latest Annie Con convention. Grace rides her childhood resentment of never playing Annie and steals the name tag of a legend to gain entry. According to the episode synopsis, Jack was supposed to be pursuing his celebrity hair EGOT, but he never mentioned that while he screamed about absent special guest Sarah Jessica Parker. After bumping into one of Jack’s nemeses, pianist Jerry, Grace lands in hot water with a fellow Annie who had been burned by the woman whose name tag she stole. One failed sing-off and a cup of water to the face later, and she’s humbled.

3. “You’re dry and bitter: Two things I like in a drink and a man.”

Originally, Karen drove Will to Jenny’s because it was on the way to her baseball team. However, once she arrived and used the bathroom (flushing a toilet herself for the first time in 20 years!), she started to settle in. She meets Jenny’s older brother, a disabled veteran. He asks Karen to retrieve his pills, and that line of questioning is one surefire way to catch Karen Walker’s romantic attention. The pair swap sexual tension before going for it, and later Karen tells Will, in so many words, how big the… encounter… was. Who knows if Karen will count this a fling or if she’ll actually catch feelings.

4. “I’m like a machine, but with emotions… so, like, machines in two years.”

When Will meets Jenny (Demi Lovato), he’s immediately thrown off by the mess in her apartment. While she wraps a prior commitment up in her bedroom, Will snaps and starts cleaning dishes. But he peeks into Jenny’s room and learns that she makes money as a cam girl. Considering it’s Will, he rushes to judgment she makes money flirting online with strangers. He expresses his concern, but Jenny assures him she means business when it comes to baby. Nonetheless, Will asks for time to think about their arrangement, but it’s Jenny who calls things off.

5. “You were looking at her like she was wearing one of Grace’s outfits.”

Maybe it’s a new era for Karen. Surprising us yet, she’s the one to knock some sense into Will, calling him out on judging Jenny for making money with her body when he’s hiring her for essentially the same purpose. He realizes he jumped to conclusions and made unfair assumptions about her lifestyle and character. With his tail between his legs and remorse on his sleeve, Will returns to Jenny’s apartment to apologize and ask her to reconsider being his surrogate. Although she responds to each of his statements with “okay,” she says okay to the most important one. The baby is back on!
