4. Seriously?

The episode got going with Dean having bad luck with the golden ticket credit card Charlie set up for them. Well, that was weird, we all thought. But the hits just kept coming, didn’t they? He got a ticket, his teeth hurt, he almost got hit by a skater.

Back at the bunker, why the heck would Sam think he could lift a metal pot off a fire without burning his hands? He burned everything and spilled gallons of boiling water and noodles on the floor. I was hungry when I saw that, too, so it was a double bummer.

The sneezing, the car breaking down, 17 cavities, just one thing after another. Not only were these little mishaps well-timed, but they had me laughing out loud for real. My best laugh was in one of our moments, as I mentioned, but the first big one came when Garth called Dean.

“Hey, Garth,” said Dean when he answered the phone. To this, Garth replied, “Dean, it’s Garth.” It was the timing of the two playing off each other, Dean’s face when it happened, and it would have been enough to have me spit out a mouthful of water if I had one. Thankfully, my screen stayed dry. But it did give me an indicator of what might be in store for the rest of the episode.

Of course, I couldn’t come up with this stuff without a brainstorming session and a team of Supernatural geniuses by my side. But they sure did. DJ Qualls gave a masterful performance during his (presumed) send off. Through the entire episode, he was calm, wise, and he saved the day repeatedly.

With Garth playing the hero of the episode, it reminds us of the role he’s played all along. It was nice to see Supernatural give him this screen time and these very odd situations to mosey into with his little bit of naive finesse.

But the Winchesters did not have this kind of role in the show this week. While Garth was sauntering through his well earned, calm, storybook life, our guys were finding themselves unable to even pick a lock to free themselves from a cell where they awaited a cage match against certain death.
