3. Amy finally stands up to her mother

After enduring countless barbs and toxic commentary from her mother, Amy finally takes a stand against her when she arrives for a deposition. Suzanne constantly belittled her daughter and made her feel unwanted. She even victim-blamed her when the assault first took place, and she was fundamentally against Amy keeping the child, despite Amy conveying the importance of keeping the baby.

Suzanne only cared about how Amy would be perceived by other people and whether or not she could “attract a man.” It was cathartic to see Amy finally tell her mom that she would not be a part of her or her daughter’s life to inflict her harmful opinions on them any longer.

4. Amy fights back against Demetri

Not every victim gets the chance to physically fight back against their attacker, nor would all of them necessarily want that chance. Every victim handles trauma differently.

However, because this is a Lifetime movie and a certain level of drama and conflict is needed, we do get to see a scene where Amy gets to physically fight back against Demetri after he stalks her and Maddy to a school play. Amy puts her new martial arts skills to the test when she kicks Demetri and forces him to let go of her, and also manages to record him saying something incriminating to use at court later.

5. The judge officially closes the custody case with prejudice

After Amy delivers her heartbreaking speech about her continued trauma over the rape case, the judge formally rules it closed with prejudice, which means no court can reopen it, even if Demetri tried again. While it is a win for Amy and Maddy, she points out that due to lack of legislation in Georgia, the same thing could happen to countless other mothers.

In real life, Megison was a big part of the reason that the Rape Survivor Child Custody Act was eventually passed to protect victims from their attackers trying to become part of them and their child’s life.
