5. “Art Crawl”

No surprise that this list starts with the episode we were introduced to Gayle in. Season 1’s “Art Crawl” was a whacky episode from the start. Using it to introduce Gayle was a stroke of genius by the writers. We finally got to see other members of Linda’s family aside from her parents and what a treat it was to learn about Gayle and her art in the episode. Since it’s been a long time since Season 1, here’s a refresher.

The episode begins with Bob and the kids touring the town during “Art Crawl,” an annual festival where artists can display their art around town. They’re having fun, making fun of some of the art before returning to the restaurant. Upon their return, they find out that Linda has allowed Gayle to hang up her “animal anus” paintings. Bob is furious at first before finding out how much the Art Crawl board hates it and vows to keep them up forever. Eventually, Linda gets tired of it and paints over them, confessing it to everyone in the end. Considering how Season 1 was, this episode was like a walk-in-the-park for the Belchers.

While most of the episode focused on Gayle’s art, we did get a little bit of backstory into Gayle especially her shenanigans. As far as Gayle episodes go, this was a great place for the series to start. It proved just how weird and eccentric she could be although nothing has been quite to that extreme since. If anything, it gave us a pretty solid picture of who Gayle is but doesn’t really explain why she does the things she does.
