Nancy Drew’s sleuthing may have led her to her greatest enemy yet, an unrelenting sea spirit. But did Nancy pay her debt and is the Aglaeca gone for good?

Even in the magical world of Harry Potter, there would be a hefty price to pay to ask the sea to spit up the bones of a specific person. That kind of convenient magic doesn’t come easily, or else all magical law enforcement would be solving cases by the hundreds. So, Nancy Drew didn’t know what she was getting into when Lucy Sable eluded that her bones must be found. And I don’t think Nancy would have played along if she had known that the consequences of summoning the help of an Aglaeca were going to be brutal.

Nancy asked the Aglaeca to bring her Lucy’s bones, and when Nancy looked back in a mirror to see the debt of her request, she saw Owen Marvin’s face dripping in blood. The sea spirit wanted Owen’s life as payment, and Nancy and the others refused to give him up. And that means that the repercussions were going to be nothing short of abysmal. It would have been nice if Lucy had considered what Nancy would have to give up to bring back her bones.

Unfortunately, what’s done is done, and Nancy can’t go back in time to change it. The Aglaeca sent out eerie messages to everyone in the Drew crew so that they wouldn’t forget about the debt hanging over their heads. But after performing a Victoria Fan instructed ritual with newly found dad Ryan Hudson,  the Drew crew experiences even stronger sea illusions. And Owen doesn’t get the luxury of seeing frightful visions; he’s found dead and bleeding out in a bathtub.

All things considered, if the Aglaeca posited Owen as the bounty for Lucy’s bones, the debt has painfully been paid in full. However, I don’t think that the buck stops there. Nancy had asked Victoria what would happen if the Aglaeca wasn’t an inhuman sea spirit, but one that had been alive once. Victoria admits that if that were the case, it would account for the blood relative ritual not working.

The last illusions that Nancy experienced made her resemble a bound woman with roughly shorn hair. If we factor in the other visions Nancy’s friends had,  then this woman was probably tied up with rope and unceremoniously thrown into the sea. We may have a new murder mystery in our hands. In fact, Owen’s death may have just been a warning that the Aglaeca means business. And what the Aglaeca really wants is for Nancy to find out what happened to her and get her justice.

When it’s all said and done, the remaining episodes of Nancy Drew may not entirely be dedicated to mourning Owen. Though, I imagine that Nancy will have a lot to process emotionally. Discovering that she is a Hudson, that her dead mother has been haunting her, and losing Owen at the same time is going to take a massive toll on Nancy. But if everything continues as projected, Nancy will have her hands full, trying to find the Aglaeca’s origins.
