Around mid-season, Team Max looked like the clear winner in the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist love triangle. After Episode 10, it’s time to reconsider.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 1, Episode 10, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Outburst” probably should have been called “Zoey’s Extraordinary Meltdown.” No one can really blame Zoey for getting to that point.

Trying too hard to keep your emotions at bay is a recipe for disaster. So, given everything that’s happened so far in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 1, it was only a matter of time before Zoey lost that battle.

Last time Zoey felt out of control, her powers glitched. This time, Zoey herself acted like a completely different person. The sweet, socially-awkward hero of our story was replaced with someone who lashed out at pretty much everyone.

It’s relatable in all the worst ways. When faced with something too painful to handle, sometimes we get angry. What we do with that anger shows us where we are in the grief process; and what Zoey did with her anger is a very clear indication that she’s not in a place to handle any new complications.

So, sorry Team Max and Team Simon: You’re both losing out to Team No One for now. While, at times, it’s been fun to play the love triangle game with Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Zoey needs to work on Zoey before she even thinks about working on a romantic relationship with either of these guys.

Because her father’s condition is rapidly worsening and only has one possible outcome—death—Zoey has unimaginable amounts of grief coming her way. Just like Simon couldn’t make his relationship with Jessica work or get past “singing the same old song” enough to move forward with Zoey while still grieving his own dad, Zoey is about to be emotionally unavailable in a whole new way.

It’s not as if our leading lady has really been all that available without the looming tragedy, anyway. Before she attempts a relationship with Simon, she needs to really be honest with herself about why she sang a love song to Max.

Of course, that concept is easily reversible: Zoey has no business trying to move forward with Max when she’s still hoping to act on that hardcore chemistry with Simon either. Until she’s definitely sure how she feels, Zoey needs to just stay away from both of them.

Oddly enough, one of the last things Simon said to Zoey in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 1, Episode 10 was something she should be saying to both of her potential love interests:

"You deserve someone who can be fully present and give you everything."

Right now, Max could be that person for Zoey, but she’s nowhere near in a place to be that person for him. Maybe that still makes Max the better choice. At least he’s capable of a one-sided relationship with Zoey, while anything with Simon wouldn’t have any sides at all.

But just like Zoey deserves better than what Simon can give her, Max deserves better than what Zoey can give him. Whenever Simon has worked through his pain enough to want to try for a new relationship, he also deserves better than the current version of Zoey.

That’s what makes us Team No One. Or, if we absolutely had to pick a team, it would be Team Dance.

Because, really, dancing it out seemed to be the only thing to bring Zoey back from her over-boiling emotions and get her behaving like a normal person again. Or, well, dancing at least made Zoey as normal as she has ever been, whatever that even means.

Next. It's time to feel the Punky Power.. dark
