Is Stateless on Netflix based on a true story?

Stateless on Netflix features heartbreaking stories, are any of them true?

Stateless, a new series on Netflix, brings audiences heartbreaking stories that are tough to watch. The line that appears on the first episode of Stateless shares that the stories have been inspired by true events, but how real is it? Here’s what we know!

Whenever “based on true events” or “inspired by a true story” appears on our screen, we all pay a little more attention to it or prepare for a scare, depending on the genre of what we are about to watch. When it comes to Stateless, it was the former.

The immigration system is severely flawed, I’m sure we are all aware of this. But just how bad is it? Stateless on Netflix give us a glimpse. From all the stories told, which one inspired the series?

Which story on Stateless is real?

That would be Sofie Wener’s (Yvonne Strahovski) story. The character is based on Cornelia Rau, a German-born, Australian citizen who was detained within the immigration penal system for 10 months, Esquire shares.

After Rau was discovered to be an Australian citizen and freed, an investigation was ordered to be conducted in the immigration center, and the discoveries were haunting. The investigation is how many of the other character’s stories were put together.

Rau truly did join a  cult and was later sent to a  mental hospital before ending up in the immigration penal system. Rau was rewarded over two million dollars, but the mental damage she suffered was already done. She is living a much happier life now and in a better place mentally, according to Men’s Health.
