What is Knights of the Old Republic?

One product, however, has yet to return. It’s a series which fans have desperately wanted more of ever since it was first released. While rumors of an adaptation or continuation have floated around for years, nothing has ever materialized, and audiences only grew more ravenous as a result. I’m, of course, referring to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

As the title would suggest, Knights of the Old Republic takes place 4,000 years before the Star Wars films. The Galactic Republic is under attack by the warrior race known as the Mandalorians.

The Jedi Order, though allied with the Republic, is reluctant to get involved in the war due to their pacifistic and contemplative ways. Not content to sit on the sidelines, a Knight named Revan and his apprentice Malak lead a number of Jedi into battle against their superiors’ wishes.

Though they successfully drive the Mandalorians back, their pursuit of war and power cause them to fall to the Dark Side and become Sith. This ignites another conflict known as the Jedi Civil War.

The remaining Knights struggle to overcome the newly-formed Sith Empire, and the situation grows more desperate by the day. Brother is pitted against brother, and the entire galaxy could be ravaged as a result.

The first game, developed by BioWare, places players in the midst of that war. You take the role of a Republic soldier no memory of past events. Revan has died in battle, and you have a mysterious connection with the Jedi who killed him, Bastila Shan.

Because of this and your affinity with the Force, you are trained as a Jedi to harness your gifts and understand this telepathic bond. At the same time, Malak leads the Sith with an iron fist, equipped with a seemingly limitless fleet thanks to a legendary artifact called the Star Forge. You and your ragtag team of heroes must embark on a quest to find this weapon and stop Malak once and for all.

Obsidian Entertainment took over development for the sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Five years after the first title, the Jedi are nearly extinct and are hunted like dogs. Sound familiar?

The galaxy is still recovering from the Civil War that left numerous planets devastated. You are a former Jedi who was cut off from the Force and exiled for following Revan during the Mandalorian Wars. However, your connection with an enigmatic Force-user named Kreia slowly causes your abilities to return.

Unfortunately, this attracts the attention of new, deadlier Sith Lords who strike from the shadows, eagerly awaiting their chance to snuff out the last of their enemies. To stop them, you must gather the remaining Jedi, reclaim your ties to the Force, and overcome your past demons to save the galaxy once again.
