6. In Her Shoes

Original release date: In Her Shoes first debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 14, 2005 before receiving a theatrical release on Oct. 7, 2005.

Box office earnings: The film performed modestly at the box office, posting a middling opening weekend at No. 3 and bringing in a worldwide gross of over $83 million against a budget of $35 million.

Critical acclaim: Despite its minor impact at the box office, In Her Shoes proved a minor critical hit, holding a respectable 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. All three lead actresses landed award nominations for their performances, including a Golden Globe nomination for Shirley MacLaine and an Imagen Foundation Award for Cameron Diaz.

About the role: Diaz stars in In Her Shoes as Maggie Feller, a free spirited party girl who finds herself thrown out of both her father and stepmother’s home as well as her older lawyer sister Rose’s (Toni Collette) home.

Maggie and Rose hardly get along or agree on much, but their worlds turn upside down when they discover their long-lost grandmother, Ella (Shirley MacLaine). Clashing in and out of each other’s lives forces Maggie, Rose, and Ella to confront complex truths about themselves, their relationships, and their family.

Why it’s the best: Based on the novel of the same name, In Her Shoes somehow made it out of the 2000s as one of the decade’s most underrated movies. It’s heartwarming and heartbreaking, light and dark, funny and cathartic.

It’s also a perfect storm of excellent performances by three of the strongest on-screen talents of quite possibly all time. Diaz tucks into the vulnerable sweet spot with Maggie that’s a joy to watch. We trust Diaz to take us on a journey with Maggie, and the payoff couldn’t be more worth taking a walk in her shoes.
