Godzilla and Kong’s big-screen brawl may be a one-sided schooling

Everyone loves a good monster mash in movies, especially in October. However, one of the biggest bashes actually comes to us next year. It’s a rematch decades in the making, the King of the Monsters against the King of Skull Island. I’m, of course, talking about Godzilla vs. Kong.

The hype for this clash of titans started in 2014 when Legendary Pictures rebooted the Godzilla franchise, bringing the fire-breathing dinosaur to American audiences in a gritty update. It aimed for both human disaster drama and monster spectacle, and it was successful enough to warrant a sequel.

It didn’t take long for Legendary to partner with Warner Bros. for a shared universe of creature features, appropriately dubbed “the MonsterVerse.” Their next step was to reboot King Kong, a gigantic gorilla and one of the most famous movie monsters of all time. The goal: set up an eventual showdown between the two icons.

Enter Kong: Skull Island, a Vietnam-era flick that reinvented the character amidst a pulpy popcorn adventure. This was soon followed by Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a sequel that expanded the universe to bring all the creatures out of the woodwork and even included several of Godzilla’s classic foes.

The stage is set for the inevitable showdown, but one burning question still remains: who will win? Well, to determine each combatant’s chances, you have to know their origins.
