Lovecraft Country is a drama with themes of race, magic, and horror. However, the show manages to intertwine historical events during the Jim Crow era as framing devices to set up each episode. The murder of Emmett Till served as the backdrop for the eight-episode and last week, the Tulsa Race Massacre acted as the setting for the majority of the episode.

At the beginning of the ninth episode, Diana is still possessed by Lancaster’s spell. In order to save Diana, Christina resets the curse thanks to Hippolyta’s blood exchange for Atticus’s cooperation in her quest to achieve immortality, which he begrudgingly accepts. It’s important to note that resetting the curse only bought Diana 24 hours to live.

To the surprise of the family, Hippolyta returns and suggests using Hiram’s multiverse machine to travel to Tulsa in 1921, where Tic’s mother hid the Book of Names before it was destroyed in a house fire. Tic, Leti, and Montrose decided to travel through the portal while Hippolyta holds it open.

The trio arrives in Tulsa just hours before the massacre begins. When a scared and mortified Montrose leaves the scene, Tic goes after him while Leti goes to find the book. Tic and the present-day Montrose watch Montrose’s younger self meet a boy, who may have been more than a friend.

The younger Montrose calls him a derogatory statement before a white mob shoots and kills Montrose’s friend. When a young George and Dorothy arrive to help Montrose, the trio is overpowered and cornered until the present-day Tic intervenes and fights off the entire crew.

Meanwhile, Leti makes it to the house, but it’s overrun by a white mob, who begins to light the house on fire. Leti begs Tic’s grandmother to hand over the book. Leti is invulnerable to death, but the rest of the family will burn to death. However, Leti convinces Tic’s grandmother to hand over the Book of Names after admitting she’s carrying Tic’s child. The grandmother burns to death, but Leti eventually escapes with Tic and Montrose through the portal just in time.

Lovecraft Country Season 1, Episode 10 preview

Episode 10 will serve as the season finale. The episode is appropriately titled, “Full Circle,” as Tic will head back with Christina to Ardham, where he traveled to at the beginning of the season. Tic knows Christina’s immortality spell is supposed to kill him, which is why he’s creating a plan to save the rest of his family in the promo. Will the finale tie up every storyline, or will cliffhangers set up a potential second season?
