Talon poses a threat to Yavalla’s plan for paradise on The Outpost

Yavalla sets her plan for paradise in motion this week on The Outpost. As we saw last week on The CW drama, the Blackblood priestess Yavalla got the Kinj she was seeking to lead her people to paradise. However, as most of us suspected, her promise of peace wasn’t as benign as it seemed.

In some of the final moments of the last episode, Yavalla promised there would be peace between humans and Blackbloods. But then, shockingly, her Kinj multiplies and we see one of them go into Gwynn. Suddenly Gwynn became a docile puppet and more than happy to do as Yavalla bids, even finding Garret Spears.

So clearly Yavalla’s idea of peace and paradise can’t be that great for the humans of The Outpost. We went into this week’s episode with so many questions. Will Yavalla find Garret? What exactly is her plan? And this week we got the answers. But we also found out one major problem with Yavalla’s plan she didn’t anticipate.

Talon exposes the flaw in Yavalla’s plan

Yavalla was able to send a Kinj into Gwynn and bring her into what she is calling The United with no problem. We see Yavalla do this again with others and we even see Gwynn pass a Kinj on to her childhood friend Sammy. In theory, they should be able to do this to anyone and create a sort of hive mind.

After what Yavalla did to Gwynn, her revelation that she never intended to leave in order to find paradise doesn’t come as much of a surprise. She intends to find paradise right there at The Outpost by subjugating all of the humans, and also any Blackblood who questions her.

So imagine Yavalla’s surprise when she captures Talon and tries to send the Kinj into her but realizes it doesn’t work. Talon’s Kinj was able to fight off Yavalla’s Kinj and protect her from it’s effects. Effectively, this makes Talon immune and leads her to the conclusion that a Kinj doesn’t work on those who already have a Kinj. Especially since Zed’s Kinj was not able to work on Talon last season, a fact he never mentioned to Yavalla.

I have to wonder if this is true for everyone, or if the strength of the Kinj matters? So far we’ve mainly seen Talon be immune to the effects of other Kinj, but perhaps hers is just stronger. However, at the moment, our gang is working with the assumption that Yavalla’s Kinj will not work on anyone who has their own Kinj.

Once Talon, Garret, and Janzo come to this realization they know that there’s only one more person they can trust with this secret, Zed. He is the only other person they know with his own Kinj. At first Zed is loyal to Yavalla and understandably reluctant to believe them, even after Garret reveals himself to Zed. But once Wren comes to them and tells Janzo that her own mother just forcibly tried to send a Kinj into her even Zed has to accept the truth. Yavalla won’t be winning any mother of the year awards.

Before our heroes can form any sort of plan to stop Yavalla they find out that Tobin has returned, having just sacrificed his own happiness for a sham wedding in order to protect Gwynn. They want to stop Gwynn from bringing Tobin into The United but Garret and Talon are too late.

We see Gwynn embrace Tobin but he’s not part of The United yet, hopefully, there’s still time for Talon and the others to save him and stop Yavalla. The irony is that Tobin thinks he’s returned with an army to save Gwynn, not realizing that Gwynn is no longer herself and he’s playing right into Yavalla’s hands.

This will be some serious angst for Gwynn and Tobin fans, especially once she finds out that he had to commit himself to marriage with his childhood love Falista in order to secure her army. Who knows, perhaps the pain and heartbreak when she finds out about Tobin’s marriage will snap Gwynn out of Yavalla’s control?

Thankfully Wren and Janzo are having a much better time in the romance department as they decide to explore the compatibility of their species…for “science”. Those two nerds are very cute together and I’m loving it. They’ve made this season at least ten times more enjoyable.

Garret and Talon also manage to steal a sweet moment and a kiss between all the craziness and battles, so at least some couples are still happy in love. Let’s hope it stays that way, though I doubt it. We know per Deadline that there’s going to be at least 13 more episodes of The Outpost after this season so there’s bound to be a lot more drama.

By the end of the episode, we’re left with Talon, Garret, Janzo, Wren, and Zed forming an unlikely team to try and stop Yavalla from completely taking The Outpost. Gwynn has been taken over and Tobin’s fate is currently up in the air as we have yet to see if Gwynn will succeed in making him part of The United. The one advantage our heroes have is that Talon and Zed are seemingly immune to Yavalla’s Kinj, but will that be enough if she manages to take over the rest of The Outpost?
