Parasyte

Being 17 can already be tough, with high school drama and raging hormones. But it’s a whole lot worse when your hand is possessed by a parasite. Directed by Kenichi Shimizu, Parasyte tells the story of high school student Shinichi Izumi, who lives, like many others, in a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo with his mother and father. His story takes a turn, of course, when Izumi’s hand becomes possessed by a worm-like alien, who arrives on earth one night with a less-than-merry band of other aliens that drill themselves into the brains of humans through their ears. It’s as gross as it sounds.

Failing to enter Izumi’s brain, an alien named Migi instead takes over Izumi’s hand through his arm, both beings retaining their own personalities in the same body. Izumi and Migi eventually form a strong bond, understandably after sharing the same body, and work together to help one another survive as they encounter and battle other parasites that want to kill Izumi once they realize his brain is still intact.

Based on the 1988 science-fiction horror manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki, Parasyte is an unusual story that is both a complete nightmare and also a surprisingly endearing series about human fragility, relationships, and sharing the most intimate parts of your life with someone else. However, this anime is not for those that become squeamish at the sight of a significant amount of blood and copped body parts, but there’s plenty more series to check out on our list of Netflix anime to start watching this Halloween.
