The Princess Bride

This film, along with the book that inspired it, is the quintessential fairy tale. What does that mean? Well, it has a little bit of everything, including kings, castles, pirates, monsters, swordfights, revenge, and romance.

However, it also means that it wholeheartedly embraces its nature as a storybook. The writing, acting, direction, and music are all fully committed to wonderful romanticism. Ideas like true love conquering all, which would ordinarily seem trite, are treated with the utmost respect. The movie miraculously accomplishes this without ever lapsing into melodrama or cliché.

This is partially due to the slight tongue-in-cheek tone that permeates the whole piece. As a result, the film is ridiculously fun to watch, a staple of any comfort food. On the other hand, it never goes into parody. It consistently walks that fine line, achieving a perfect balance between seriousness and silliness.

That mastery is what makes the characters so irresistibly charming. Whether a hero, villain, major player, or bit part, everyone here has a unique appeal. It should come as no surprise, then, that they’re all utterly unforgettable and insanely quotable.

The Princess Bride truly has something for each of us. You’d think that would make it an unfocused mess. Thankfully, it weaves all of its endearing elements together into one seamless, timeless story.
