The team goes on an NCIS treasure hunt in Season 18, Episode 3

There was an NCIS treasure hunt happening and we were here for it. This week found the team looking into a murder that quickly led to a search for treasure and the man behind the hunt. Plus, this episode also marked the beginning of the winter break for the CBS series. While there won’t be a new episode until January, there was a cliffhanger to get fans anticipating what will happen.

This case found the team the day after their night at the bar, which was alluded to at the end of the second episode. While nursing hangovers, the team was tasked with finding out who killed Petty Officer Diego Barnes. Not only was the poor guy eviscerated, but it also appeared he had swallowed a piece of paper to hide something from his killer.

A search for buried treasure wrapped up in murder

Eventually, this piece of paper led them to a treasure map created by a man named Angus DeMint. Having given up his wealth after the death of his wife, DeMint is steadfast in his refusal to reveal anything about the treasure, despite it possibly aiding the agents in finding Barnes’ killer.

It wasn’t easy to determine who was responsible and just when you thought it could be one person, the show takes you by surprise. This episode not only saw the team working on a treasure hunt, but it also forged the importance of family and love above all else.

In fact, little snippets surrounding the team’s outing at the bar did lead to Jimmy at least telling Gibbs how he thought of him as a father figure and friend. We love this team.

A different kind of treasure hunt

Elsewhere in the episode, Tobias continued his search for the leader of the drug ring. This time, by working at Beltway Burger. His search for possible drugs hidden at the burger joint mirrors the team’s treasure hunt, except his remains a mystery.

All we know by the end of the episode is Tobias stumbled across the name “Merriweather” and he was supposed to explain things to Gibbs within a couple of days. But by then, he is nowhere to be found.

Did he go off to find this mysterious leader alone? Was he caught in his efforts to unmask this Merriweather person? We’ll have to wait to find out answers on January 5 when the show returns in 2021.
