Superstore spin-off ideas we’d love to see after Season 6

For six seasons, NBC’s hit comedy series Superstore has been a consistent source of levity while making sense of our world in the aisles of a big-box supermarket. After the departure of leading star America Ferrera, the comedy continued to do what it does best during the most challenging of circumstances. But Season 6 will be our last shift with the gang… or will it?

Although Superstore will come to an end next year, we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to our favorite Cloud 9 employees. Naturally, we’re holding onto hope for a spin-off featuring one (or more!) of the gang going on new and exciting misadventures outside of the store. From raising birds to hitting the books, here are five spin-off ideas we’d love to see from the Cloud 9 crew!

1. Dina and her birds

Obviously, Dina’s birds met a tragic fate long ago, but we all know that her ultimate dream would be to care for birds of some sort full time. As much fulfillment as she receives wielding control over her fellow Cloud 9 employees, a spin-off of Dina working for a zoo or bird sanctuary or even taking up competitive birdwatching (if that’s a thing) has all the potential in the world for comedy.

Dina’s often the unsung hero of Superstore and the strongest member of the ensemble. At the end of the day, we really just want to see the reliably hilarious Lauren Ash in the lead of a sitcom.

2. Cheyenne and Mateo in Los Angeles

Other than Amy and Jonah, who’s the best duo on Superstore? If you said anyone besides Cheyenne and Mateo, you’re lying. The shenanigans these two besties get up to when they should be working are consistently delightful side stories. (See: The ill-fated musical festival they were planning pre-pandemic.)

Even though Cheyenne’s recently enjoyed greater responsibility at Cloud 9, a spin-off featuring Cheyenne (Nichole Sakura) and Mateo (Nico Santos) moving to Los Angeles and pursuing a career as influencers has endless possibilities, including cameos from Amy.

3. Glenn’s church life

Throughout Superstore’s run, Glenn (Mark McKinney) has often mentioned the goings-on at his seemingly eccentric place of worship. He’s very committed to his religious beliefs and the community one finds while attending weekly mass and the various activities associated with church beyond Sunday service. But we’ve never seen Glenn’s life outside the confines of Cloud 9. Even though NBC’s church choir comedy Perfect Harmony didn’t work out, a sitcom about Glenn’s home life and quirky group of fellow churchgoers feels rife for comedic exploration.

4. Carol and Sandra buddy comedy

Yes, they are enemies. Yes, Carol all but attempted to kill Sandra and ruin her wedding. Yes, Sandra’s probably still working through that terror. But you have to admit that their dynamic is truly funny.

Now, a show about Carol and Sandra getting up to trouble together sounds more like a “webisode” series networks loved to do in the 2010s as sponsored content for a car company or something. Regardless, there could be an idea here that highlights the comedic strengths of both Kaliko Kauahi and Irene White, two of the most underrated members of the cast.

5. Jonah goes back to college

Look, we’re all holding out hope that by the end of Season 6, Amy and Jonah will have reunited and ride off into the sunset together. Their breakup was too bittersweet to not eventually be mended by a reconciliation at the series’s end. But if things don’t happen to go our way and America Ferrera doesn’t appear in the finale, the end of the show shouldn’t mean the end of Ben Feldman’s performances as Jonah Simms.

Currently, Jonah’s searching for the next chapter, and maybe that’s going back and finishing business school — or pursuing a different area of study more suited to his interests. Perhaps even in California… nearby Amy… You see where this is going.

Next. Will Superstore ever take Amy and Jonah’s relationship to the next level?. dark
