Horror fans get ready, there’s a thrilling historical drama anthology dropping on Amazon Prime Video this April that’s sure to have you looking twice at shadows. Them–created by Little Marvin and executive produced by Lena Waithe–is a must-watch for fans of HBO’s Lovecraft Country.

The series winds the clock back to the 1950s, but instead of being concerned with the North vs. South navigation of American racism in all its forms, Them takes us west to California.

The not-so-new frontier is ripe with stories not often discussed when it comes to this time period. For those interested in getting a glimpse of how the west was during Jim Crow’s reign, this is the show for you.

Here’s what we know so far about Them.

Them release date

The horror anthology series is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, April 9. Subtitled “Covenant,” viewers can expect the show to deal with what it means to be bound to a place.

Considering the series will be exploring The Second Great Migration, its effects on predominately white neighborhoods, and the violently racist backlash members of those communities enacted on non-white residents, do know the horror playing out onscreen won’t solely be based in fantasy.

Them cast

Them follows the Emory family’s move from North Carolina to California, making this family of four played by Deborah Ayorinde (Lucky Emory), Ashley Thomas (Henry Emory), Shahadi Wright Joseph (Ruby Emory), and Melody Hurd (Gracie Emory) the main focus of the series. However, fans of Anika Noni Rose may be pleasantly surprised to see her in the recurring role of Ella Mae.

Based on the trailer, Alison Pill’s character Betty Wendell looks to be a threatening presence in the neighborhood. It’s likely the same will be the case for Ryan Kwanten’s George Bell. But that’s not surprising considering the Emorys look to be “pioneering” into an all-white housing development.

Them synopsis

According to Amazon Prime Video, the official synopsis for Them is:

"THEM is a limited anthology series that explores terror in America. The first season, 1950s-set COVENANT centers around a Black family who move from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood during the period known as The Great Migration. The family’s idyllic home becomes ground zero where malevolent forces, next door and otherworldly, threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them."

The neighborhood the Emorys move into is Compton. Yes, you’re reading that right. For those of us who need a history lesson on how “white flight” affected all areas of America and not just the North, Them is here to provide it to us along with a scare.
