Crime drama fans, it’s time to once again rewind the clock to the early ’90s. City on a Hill season 2 has landed on Showtime!

The series which is centered on the “Boston Miracle”–a period of time when the rampant violence and crime in the city perpetrated by criminals and corrupt police officers alike began to see a decline–has made its return to the network and is turning the heat up.

Here’s what to expect from season 2 of this throwback series including how current conversations on race and police corruption in America have shaped the season.

Let’s dive in!

City on a Hill season 2 cast

Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge return as Jackie Rohr and Decourcy Ward, respectively. The corrupt but venerated FBI veteran and the assistant district attorney formed an unlikely alliance last season. It was a working relationship built on mutual need and not a similar sense of duty or code, one that season 2 will see tested as Jackie works to save his own skin.

Matthew Del Negro will reprise his role as Detective Chris Caysen, a member of Boston PD’s Gang Division. The actor has been bumped up to a series regular.

Joining the City on a Hill season 2 cast is Leon as Reverend Isaiah Hughes, a man who is deeply embedded in his community as both a spiritual leader and an activist.

City on a Hill season 2 synopsis

Per Deadline:

"Season two centers on a federal housing project in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston that is plagued with drug violence and a rightful distrust in local law enforcement. As coalition leader Grace Campbell (Walker) works tirelessly on behalf of the community, her efforts are undermined by gang activity happening right under her nose.Irreverent FBI agent Jackie Rohr (Bacon) seeks to exploit Boston’s defective criminal justice system in a desperate attempt to salvage his own career. Unfortunately for Jackie, assistant district attorney Decourcy Ward (Hodge) is onto his adversary’s latest misstep."

The series will also be taking into account the current discussion on race and police corruption in America, but with a ’90s lens.

According to executive producer and showrunner Tom Fontana, “We couldn’t say things like ‘defund the police’ or ‘Black Lives Matter’ because those terms didn’t exist in the 1990s, but we tried to indicate those situations as best as we could.”

Input was taken from all the actors in the series during a redrafting period for each episode of City on a Hill season 2 in order to reflect on what’s going on in America now with an eye toward the past.
