Awake premieres on Netflix on June 9, 2021. Gina Rodriguez stars in the mystery drama that follows a tragic global event. Is the movie the streaming titan’s next big hit or should you skip it?

Hidden Remote had the chance to watch Awake early and I was eager to see Gina Rodgriguez in the thriller. I’m a fan, but more than anything I love apocalyptic movies and the overall premise of this film.

Awake also stars Ariana Greenblatt, Frances Fisher, Finn Jones, and others. The movie follows Jill, a struggling single mother who’s trying to get full custody of her kids. While visiting her kids, a global event wipes out all electronics, including phones and cars. Nothing is working.

To make matters worse, humankind’s ability to sleep has also been taken away. Humans can be unbelievably tired, but still unable to fall asleep. They aren’t able to pass out from sharp pain or injuries.

Is Awake worth watching?

Now, I don’t know about you, but if I don’t get a good night’s rest, I’m going to be grouchy the next day! So I can only imagine the exhaustion these characters are feeling. This is one of the things I enjoyed about the movie the most, how tired the people are portrayed. They are going insane, and it’s easy to believe.

After days of no sleep, everyone is angry and hallucinating, unable to think rationally. It’s complete chaos and the movie does a great job displaying the credible madness that quickly unfolds.

As the trailer teases, there are very few people who are still able to sleep, such as Jill’s young daughter, Matilda. But, like any mother, Jill doesn’t want Matilda to be used for tests to find a cure. However, dying and leaving Matilda alone is also not a good option. Jill has a  tough choice to make.

While I wouldn’t say Awake is Netflix’s next big hit, I can say I recommend it. The movie keeps you entertained and trying to guess what the possible cure, if any, could be.

Depending on how you want to think about it, the ending may leave you with a big question, but it’s not one you’ll be left feeling frustrated about.
