Box Office: On a reported budget of $85 million, Tokyo Drift grossed $62 million domestically and $96 million internationally for a total of $158 million worldwide.
Critical Acclaim: On Rotten Tomatoes, Tokyo Drift has a 37% on the Tomatometer and a 69% Audience Score.
Why It’s No. 9: It’s not that Tokyo Drift is a bad movie, per se. It’s still a fun watch. However, Tokyo Drift doesn’t fit in the mythology of the Fast and Furious. It sticks out like a sore thumb. The two driving forces in The Fast Saga are Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. Tokyo Drift does not feature Walker, and Diesel only makes a cameo appearance at the end of the film.
The most important development from Tokyo Drift was the addition of Justin Lin to the director’s chair. Lin’s wild action sequences have become a staple throughout the series. Lin would go on to direct the next three films in the franchise before taking a break. Lin serves as the director for F9 and will direct Fast 10.
