To many viewers, The White Lotus episode 2, titled “New Day,” introduced something new — ASMR. If you’re wondering what the heck that is, we’ve got answers!

The limited series kicked off its second episode featuring Olivia (Sydney Sweeney) and Paula (Brittany O’Grady) bored out of their minds before the girls decide to dig into their stash and do “ASMR.”

Those who know what ASMR is were pretty ecstatic to see the HBO satire comedy mention it as it doesn’t get the attention it deserves, but most audiences reached for their phones to Google what the heck ASMR is.

In the episode, Olivia is making quiet noises by Paula’s face and ears and Paula appears extremely relaxed. It almost seems like meditation. Did you stare in wonder or join Paula in relaxing while feeling a tingling sensation in your scalp?

The White Lotus episode 2 features a pretty cool ASMR scene

ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response, which can be described as a tingling sensation that begins in the scalp, but can be felt down your neck and back.

If you felt incredibly relaxed, were attentive, and felt these tingling vibes, you probably get ASMR! It’s triggered by auditory and visual stimuli, just like Olivia was doing for Paula. You can learn more about it, HERE.

It began to surface on YouTube around 2015 with many “ASMR creators” making videos to relax their audience. They are great for calming down your anxiety, help you go to sleep, mediate, and more.

W Magazine even has a segment titled “Celebrity ASMR” on YouTube, in which celebrities try doing ASMR. Still, it’s not a widely known phenomenon.

Those who don’t experience ASMR may just find these “whispering videos” odd, but really, they’re missing out!
