If FXX’s Dave Season 1 chronicles Lil Dicky’s entry into superstardom, then season 2 highlights his struggles with staying relevant in the industry. One moment you’re rapping on “The Breakfast Club,” and the next moment, you’re messing up freestyles in front of your peers.

Last week’s episode featured two timelines: Dave and Emma’s beginnings at an advertising agency in 2012 and the XXL Freshman Class video shoot in the present-day. In 2012, Dave and Emma worked together on ads as creative teammates. However, both had bigger aspirations as Dave wanted to be a famous rapper while Emma wanted to direct videos.

After being denied the opportunity to pitch their ideas, the duo force their way into a Mountain Dew meeting and present their idea. Emma created all of the graphics while Dave rapped to the entire room. The executives loved the pitch and in particular, Lil Dicky’s rap, but failed to acknowledge Emma with the same respect.

In the present-day, Lil Dicky is selected to be in the XXL Freshman Class with other standout rappers like Lil Yachty. Despite constant help and encouragement from Emma, Lil Dicky fails miserably when its his turn to freestyle. It’s also a lightbulb moment for Emma, who decides to do something for herself and offer her directing services to GaTa.

What is Dave season 2, episode 8 about?

After the XXL debacle, Lil Dicky suffers a career setback. In the promo for tonight’s episode, Lil Dicky is forced to spend more time with his parents, which comes with its own set of challenges.

Vanessa McGee wrote tonight’s episode. McGee wrote season 1, episode 9, “Ally’s Toast,” which was one of the standout episodes of the first season.
