The UK edition inspired the US version, with lots of parallels in between. If you haven’t checked out The Office UK, it’s definitely worth a binge session because it’s the show that inspired the US version. Gervais’ David Brent is like a carbon copy of Michael Scott, but with a British accent. Mackenzie Crook plays David’s right hand man Gareth Keenan, and his character formed the template for Rainn Wilson’s Dwight Schrute.
UK shows often provide the inspiration for shows in the US, and vice versa. Though they’re amazingly similar, they have a very different feel because the work cultures are so different in the two countries. In that sense, they’re even more fun to watch because you really get a sense of what office life is like in the two countries. You’ll also see that humor is very different in the UK and things that work in the UK would never work in the US, and vice versa.
