American Horror Story is changing up the recipe for its tenth season. The FX horror anthology created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk usually focuses on one story each season, but in season 10 the show is divided into two parts, “Red Tide” and “Death Valley.”

With two stories to work with, you might be wondering how many episodes are in American Horror Story: Double Feature and how it works with two stories. Let’s break it down!

There will be a total of 10 episodes in American Horror Story: Double Feature. The season will be divided into two parts, with six episodes dedicated to the “Red Tide” story and four episodes dedicated to the “Death Valley” story.

American Horror Story: Double Feature will have 10 episodes

“Red Tide” follows the story of a writer and his family who move to a quiet Northeastern beach community so that he can work on his scripts. What he doesn’t realize is that the town is full of creative people taking a vampire pill to summon and harness their creativity. It’s a slippery slope to choose drinking blood – and killing people – in order to be successful but the people of the town have found ways to manage.

“Death Valley” is an alien story that focuses on a mysterious UFO crash during the Eisenhower administration. Amelia Earhart shows up after all the years of being missing. An alien tells the president that they have big plans for earth. Then, jumping ahead to the present day, a group of college students go camping in the desert and have a close encounter of their own.

The idea for two stories packed into one season makes a lot of sense. It gives Murphy and Falchuk the flexibility to have a full season with multiple shorter stories, and it could be something that happens again in the future instead of drawing out one big story across ten to twelve episodes.

Given the warm reception to the spinoff American Horror Stories, which featured six episodes with six different stories, it’s quite possible that we’ll see more creativity with the show’s formatting moving forward.
