NCIS season 19 episode 4 gave us answers that we have been curious about when it came to Gibbs’ fate. Was he planning on coming back to NCIS or was his time as an agent officially over?

This episode found McGee and Gibbs in Alaska, tracking down Sonia Eberhart and figuring out how to prove she was involved in the murder for hire scheme. Easier said than done since they can’t find the evidence they need to stop her from working on the mine.

When they talk to Libby Alonak’s father, Tunu, he tells them his daughter was writing an article exposing the dangers of the mine on the environment.

As you may recall, Libby was the first victim of LeMere’s and was vital in putting the story together on why the mine should not be approved. Luckily, the article she wrote was safely hidden and they were able to figure out an anonymous source had been the one to give her the information needed to take down Eberhart.

NCIS season 19 episode 4 answers the question about Gibbs’ fate

Even though the source turned out to be another victim of LeMere’s, they were able to obtain his laptop that further solidified the possible motive behind the killings. Along the way, the team realized Sonia had a partner, who she attempts to call after almost being arrested.

What this episode also did, besides solving the case, was answer the question of whether Gibbs was going back to work. We saw throughout the episode he was saying goodbye, without many words, to the people who mattered most to him. Leon, Ducky, and Nick all got some form of goodbye, with Nick being less aware of what was happening.

The final goodbye was with Tim, who has spent 18 years alongside his boss. Their relationship has been so significant on the shoe and NCIS Season 19, Episode 4 truly highlighted that importance by making him the last person Gibbs spoke to. While upset that Gibbs wasn’t coming back, he understood that his boss needed the peace he was feeling after many years of being riddled with pain, anger, and sadness.

Will this be the final time we see Gibbs? Well, according to TVLine Gibbs might be gone, but never say never! He may choose to come back one day. But for now, it’s time for Gibbs to take a step back.
