Brendan Fraser has signed on to appear in the new Batgirl movie with Leslie Grace. Deadline reports that Fraser will play the villainous pyromaniac Firefly in the new movie, which is heading directly to HBO Max.

Fraser currently stars as Cliff Steele in Doom Patrol on HBO Max, so he’s already part of Warner Bros’ DC family. The transition to Firefly should be an easy one; whether he’s actually in a Firefly suit or just provides the voice, as he does in Doom Patrol, remains to be seen.

Fraser and Grace will be joined by J.K. Simmons, who will once again bring Jim Gordon to life in the film after playing the character in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

The script is being written by The Flash’s Christina Hodson, who also penned Bumblebee, with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah set to direct.

Batgirl will be one of the first DC Comics movies to premiere on HBO Max, skipping theaters altogether. It’s an unusual move but it could lead to a big payoff for WarnerMedia as they expand exclusive content on the streaming platform.

While some DC Comics movies have struggles at the box office, there is room to thrive on HBO Max and Batgirl could usher in a whole new era for superhero films debuting on the streaming service directly. This could open the door for more DC properties to be adapted into film, potentially developing into a vast interconnected universe that ties into Warner Media’s TV and feature film properties.

Firefly has a long history of tormenting Batman and the Bat family. The most recent iteration of the character came with FOX’s Gotham, where a young woman named Bridget Pike ultimately transformed into the winged firestarter. (Gotham’s Firefly was played by Michelle Veintimilla and Camila Perez)

Batgirl is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2022.
