The anticipation for one of the biggest films of 2021 is over as Dune finally premiered in theaters and on HBO Max. The film was billed as Part I so many fans are wondering if this epic adventure will get a sequel.

Based on the 1965 novel from Frank Herbert, Dune is a science-fiction film set in a far away future where noble families control the galaxy. Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a young and gifted heir to House Atreides, travels with his family to the planet Arrakis to broker peace with the  Freman natives over the planet’s top resource, melange (the “spice”).

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the movie has been praised for its spectacular visuals and magnificent set pieces. Villeneuve also constructed enthralling action sequences that really pop on the big screen.

As previously stated, this film is “Part I,” and the film only covers about half of Herbert’s novel. Will there be a sequel?

When is Dune Part 2 coming out?

Though a sequel has not been green lit, all signs are pointing towards a sequel. First of all, the box office returns were promising as the film registered a $40.1 million opening weekend in North America. This is the highest opening for a Warner Bros. film with the day-and-date strategy of theaters and HBO Max. Since Dune has such a high price tag, strong box office returns (over $220 million globally) is good sign.

Another reason for a sequel is based on how Part I concludes. Without spoiling the plot, the movie clearly ends in the middle of the story, and needs another movie to finish the plot. In an interview with Deadline, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff said, “Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that.”

Barring anything out of the ordinary in the coming weeks, a Dune sequel will in all likelihood happen, which is a great sign for fans of the story.
