If you haven’t checked out The Girl in the Woods on Peacock yet, get right on it. Jasmine Johnson talked to us about that unique love triangle and much more.

There are a lot of fantasy shows out there. None quite hit the mark like The Girl in the Woods when it comes to mixing all types of genres and storylines. This series is more than just a fantasy show about some weird cult and creature in the woods.

At the heart of the series is a lesson in acceptance. There’s a focus on friendship and love of all types. Then there are also the storylines of identity — the way people see us and the way we identify as ourselves.

Jasmine Johnson discussed those themes and the development of them in The Girl in the Woods, and we couldn’t help but ask about that unique love triangle. I don’t think we’ve seen a love triangle like that anywhere else on TV.

Jasmine Johnson talks The Girl in the Woods love triangle, themes, and more

We started the interview with a discussion about the development of the series. The series is based on two shorts from Crypt TV, The Door in the Woods and the sequel The Girl in the Woods. Both are available on YouTube so you can check them out.

Do you need to watch them before watching the Peacock series? That’s something I discussed with Johnson after admitting I hadn’t watched the original shorts (I have since!). It didn’t feel like I missed too much, but there are certainly elements from the original shorts that fans will see and appreciate.

We also talked about the unique love story, which I haven’t seen anywhere on TV before. The Girl in the Woods is all about representation in front and behind the camera. There are no token characters. They’re fully developed and integral to the story, and these are the sorts of characters we need to see more of on screen.

Carrie, Tasha, and Nolan certainly become a modern-day Scooby Gang. It would be great to see more of them together on screen, developing the friendships already formed in the first season.

The Girl in the Woods Season 2?

Speaking of seeing more of Carrie, Tasha, and Nolan, that would require a second season, right? There weren’t talks of The Girl in the Woods Season 2 at the time of the interview. That’s not surprising. It was before the show dropped on Thursday, Oct. 21.

All eight episodes were made available at once. If you haven’t watched it yet, now is the perfect time to watch it. You’ll want to binge your way through this series. With the episodes clocking in at around 30 minutes, it won’t take that long at all. (Yes, we talked about how 30-minute episodes are perfect for storytelling. There isn’t the time for the fluff!)
