Has Alice in Borderland season 2’s release date on Netflix been revealed?

After nearly a year since the first season of Japanese survival thriller drama Alice in Borderland was released on Netflix, eagle-eyed fans seem to have uncovered the official release date of the long-awaited season 2.

The dystopian show has gained a lot of traction in recent months after the unprecedented success of its new South Korean parallel, Squid Game, building on an already huge fanbase, with a viewership of around 18 million as of January 19th 2021. Fans have been begging for news since the dramatic end of the first season and it finally seems as though the Alice in Borderland season 2 release date is here.

What is Alice in Borderland about?

Without any spoilers, Alice in Borderland is an exhilarating yet heartbreaking manga-based show that follows outcast, gamer protagonist Arisu as he and his friends attempt to navigate a terrifyingly gruesome new world where the games are literally life or death in the pursuit of precious playing card rewards. In a version of Tokyo suddenly stripped bare of millions of its citizens, survival quickly becomes the only aim in the midst of barbarity, betrayal, and bedlam.

When is Alice in Borderland season 2 shooting?

According to a Netflix Festival Japan 2021 interview with Alice in Borderland stars Kento Yamazaki (portraying Ryohei Arisu) and Tao Tsuchiya (portraying Yuzuha Usagi) that dropped on Nov. 9, shooting for the second season is still underway. It will run from mid-July to late December of 2021 as stated by a casting information release by the ROBOT production studio responsible for the show.

The Netflix Festival interview (widely available with English subtitles) begins at the 08:11 minute mark of the YouTube video below, with a description of the huge global success of Alice in Borderland preceding confirmation of the current filming status of the show by Tsuchiya, who states “we are shooting on set”.

Yamazaki voices some of the main questions arising after season 1 that fans are hoping will be addressed: “What is the purpose of this game? Will they be able to return to the real world? What is the answer Arisu is seeking?”. All of these questions and more will hopefully be answered in the upcoming season.

When is Alice in Borderland season 2 coming to Netflix?

Whilst there has been no official announcement of the second season’s release date by Netflix themselves just yet, a date has been spotted by some fans. According to a translation by Twitter user @kentoloops, the fleeting caption in the top left-hand corner of the screen during the Yamazaki/Tsuchiya interview states that Alice in Borderland season 2 will be coming to our screens in December 2022.

I sought out the user directly, who kindly offered the following; “rough translation, but the caption says “December [sic] 2022 exclusive worldwide distribution.” Although this date is of course subject to change until a definitive announcement is given by Netflix, this is at least a rough guide for eager fans who can begin to prepare themselves for perhaps a longer wait for the highly anticipated Season 2 of Alice in Borderland than many had hoped.
