The Golden Palace is finally coming to Hulu in 2022

Thank you for being a friend. That’s one theme song all of us seem to have stuck in our heads and it’s because of Golden Girls. As iconic as the series was, some might not know the show actually had a spinoff. Entitled The Golden Palace, the spinoff wasn’t nearly as successful as its predecessor.

Nevertheless, the series existed although a lot of people don’t know about it. The Golden Palace was a spinoff of Golden Girls but without Dorothy aka Bea Arthur. Airing from 1992-1993, the show only had one season with 24 episodes. Since the show couldn’t seem to replicate the magic of our favorite golden gals, it was mostly forgotten.

However, die-hard fans of the Golden Girls have been hoping that Hulu or really, any streaming service would eventually release The Golden Palace. Thankfully, Hulu finally got its act together and decided to give us all that we’ve been asking for. Considering how few episodes the series had, it would only be right.

Considering how widely loved the Golden Girls is, it’s surprising that Hulu took as long as it did to make this happen. Even so, it’s nice to see that The Golden Palace is finally getting its time in the sun on January 10, 2022.

What’s the deal with Golden Girls and the Golden Palace?

While Golden Girls was an iconic show, The Golden Palace lacked the charm and energy of the original series. Additionally, there were a few key changes between the original and the spinoff. As previously noted, Bea Arthur was essentially done being Dorothy and wanted out while the other three didn’t.

The original chemistry between the four just didn’t translate to the trio of Rose, Sophia, and Blanche. Additionally, The Golden Palace aired on a completely different network. While Golden Girls was an NBC production, The Golden Palace aired on CBS. Coupled with the loss of Dorothy, the series just overall lacked in areas and couldn’t make up for the difference. Add in other popular shows of the time and The Golden Palace just couldn’t hang.

That’s not to say that Golden Palace isn’t a good show or didn’t have potential. Obviously, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty all reprised their roles. The cast was rounded out by Don Cheadle and Cheech Marin. While it hasn’t aged as well as it could, the series seems like it’s going to be a lot of fun and a nice companion to the Golden Girls.

As a Golden Girls fan, I am over the moon to finally be able to watch The Golden Palace. While nothing will ever replace Golden Girls, it’ll be nice to see some new content. It’s very rare to be able to discover a forgotten show and finally see it get its time to shine. Hopefully, the show will have a resurgence during this upcoming year.

The Golden Palace will be available to stream on January 10th, 2022.
