Demon Slayer season 2 episode 9 recap

Episode 9 titled “Defeating an Upper Rank Demon” started us off with a flashback of Tengen Uzui and his wives, Hinatsuru, Makio, and Suma visiting Uzui’s family grave.

To pay respects to the slain family, Uzui and his wives have lunch in front of the grave, but before they can dig in, Hinatsuru asks her husband whether he thinks of his siblings. Uzui tells her there’s never a single moment when he doesn’t think of them, however, he doesn’t expand any further than this, ending the conversation with the belief that he knew he was going to Hell and wanted to live the flashiest life possible because of this.

Before ending the flashback, we see an intimate moment between Hinatsuru and Uzui where he removes the cherry blossom petal from her hair. Hinatsuru asks to keep the petal and the four share hilarious banter afterward which is certainly a delight to see. Unfortunately, the joy seen here is suddenly interrupted by the continued spine-chilling fight between Uzui and Gyutaro.

Despite Uzui cutting off his limbs earlier and infecting him with wisteria, Gyutaro was able to regenerate his legs incredibly fast. Pissed at Uzui almost subduing him, the Upper Rank demon fights even more brutally, leaving Uzui no choice but to go all-out, too. As he slashes through the demon’s blood with vigor, he is, unfortunately, too slow to notice that Gyutaro is no longer fighting in front of him, rather he has his wife, Hinatsuru, in his grasp. Uzui calls out to her, and while desperately thinking of a way to get to her, he fondly remembers yet another moment shared between him and his wives.

In this flashback, the quartet discuss their plans after defeating an Upper Rank demon, desiring to live a quiet life away from the front lines before they all pass away when their time comes. With this memory, Uzui snaps, demanding the demon to leave Hinatsuru alone. Seeing Uzui deeply troubled by the demon’s actions, Tanjiro rushes into action, thinking of a different strategy to stop Gyutaro now that he could no longer rely solely on his Hinokami Kagura technique. Fortunately, he manages to conjure up a way to use both his Hinokami Kagura and his Water Breathing Techniques, allowing him to not only free Hinatsuru, much to Uzui’s gratitude, but also find a great new method to continue fighting just a tad bit longer.

On the other side, we see Inosuke and Zenitsu continue their with fight Daki who is proving to be more irksome than before. Nearly approaching mental defeat, Insokuke sees Uzui only seconds away from beheading Gyutaro which causes him to grow even more frustrated about his weaknesses. Fortunately, Zenitsu reassures Inosuke to keep fighting even if their fellow comrades behead Gyutaro. Even still, Zenitsu’s words, while encouraging, prove to be unnecessary as Gyutaro manages to Uzui’s grasp once again.

As Gyutaro gets craftier, so does Daki, leaving Zenitsu, Tanjiro, and Inosuke no other option but to come together with their respective techniques to put a stop to Daki once and for all. The flow of Water Breathing mixed with the power of Thunder Breathing combined with the savageness of Beast Breathing allow Inosuke to get close enough to saw through Daki’s neck, severing her head yet again.

Finally, Daki is incapacitated from the battle, and it seems as though the crew is a step away from victory, but just when they’re a step closer to the finish line, Gyutaro suddenly impales Inosuke in the heart and takes back his sister’s head. After seeing this, Tanjiro frantically looks for Uzui and is speechless when he sees the Sound Hashira’s hand cut off from his body. And as if things couldn’t get any worse, a sudden slash rips through Zenitsu and Tanjiro, spelling yet another setback for this group.

How will our demon slayers come back from this now that most of them are heavily injured? What or who will be able to stop Gyutaro and Daki? Is this really the end for Tengen Uzui? All these episodes will be answered very soon and we can’t wait to see how!
