Why it’s a quintessential staple: Just when you thought The CW vanquished whatever weirdness remained from The WB and the network’s early days, iZombie arrived in 2015 in the thick of pop culture’s zombie craze. While not a major hit series in the same vein of its fellow network-mates, iZombie has been an irreplaceable property for further defining the network’s evolving brand.

Based on the DC Vertigo comic book series of the same name, iZombie centers on a medical resident who finds herself transformed into a zombie after attending a party. When she realizes she needs to eat human brains to satiate her undead hunger, she takes a job at the county morgue. She starts to help the local detective solve crimes after discovering she can access traits and information about the deceased from feasting on their brain.

iZombie offered something newer, different, and lighter in relation to the long list of zombie content cranked out in the past 10 years. The series comes from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, which all but guaranteed that it would boast a whip-smart sense of humor and intriguing mysteries. Veronica Mars would have made this list had The CW not canceled it after one season on the network, but iZombie is definitely a show worth championing and a key piece of the network’s history.
