Could we BE any more surprised?! Less than a year since the cast of Friends got together for their highly-anticipated reunion, it looks like star Lisa Kudrow is already imagining what the future of the series could be — without the cast we know and love.

It’s not totally strange that the possibility of a Friends reboot might come up in conversation. In recent years, we’ve seen some of the most beloved shows come back for a revival or reboot of sorts, including Gossip Girl, Dexter, and Saved by the Bell. Though a new version of Friends would likely make a lot of money, most fans would be wary of what it would look like. And we’d assume the cast would feel the same way.

However, that assumption might be wrong, because Kudrow just revealed she would be happy to see a Friends reboot with a completely new cast. While talking to Where is the Buzz (via Screen Rant) while on the red carpet at the Better Nate Than Ever premiere this week, the Phoebe Buffay actress was asked about her feelings on the idea.

At first, when asked about a potential reboot, Kudrow shut down the idea by saying it’s not happening. Backtracking a little, she then said she’d “love” to see a reboot with a brand new cast, without any of the original actors returning.

Watch the interview below!

“I would love to see what the now version of that would be,” Kudrow enthusiastically stated.

Is a Friends reboot happening?

At this time, there is not a Friends reboot in the works. In 2019, co-creator Marta Kauffman strongly shut down the idea at a Tribeca TV Festival panel, but it’s worth noting she also said there would not be a reunion, either. Of course, she must have changed her mind because we got Friends: The Reunion in May 2021. Kauffman’s co-creator David Crane agreed at the time, saying:

“We did the show we wanted to do. We got it right, and we put a bow on it. If you visited those characters now, it just would not be the same DNA and chances are, it wouldn’t be as good.”

It seems unlikely Crane and Kauffman will ever work on a Friends reboot with a new cast, but perhaps in the future another showrunner will take it on. If that does happen, we probably shouldn’t expect it anytime soon.

In 2020, Friends star Courteney Cox was asked about a potential Friends reboot, to which she said she could see Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet in the role of Joey Tribbiani.

We most likely won’t ever see that casting come to fruition, but hey, who knows? I’m sure the Friends reunion isn’t the last time we’ll see the series return in some capacity.
