NCIS season 19 episode 17: Preparing for Hawaii
NCIS season 19 episode 17 not only had the team on a, sort of, simple case, the episode also established a crossover with NCIS: Hawaii. While the episode itself was pretty standalone, we got to see Torres preparing for the possibility of interviewing a witness from an old case who had disappeared.
The episode itself followed Thomas Miller, a former Navy pilot who had died. He was part of Palmer and Knight’s grief support group, and Tobias Fornell was his grief sponsor. Thomas had joined the group after the loss of Stacey Jordan, who was part of his team and died in a helicopter accident. He felt guilty for her death and had received threats from her dad for what happened.
After visiting with the grieving dad, Tim looks into claims that he had received about his daughter being alive.
McGee and Nick think this is unlikely, especially since Jordan has her ashes. They believe it might be a group overseas who scam victims of military families.

While Tim focuses on this part of the case, Parker, Knight, and Torres find out more about what is going on in the case. They discover that Thomas has been living a double life, married to to two women and he has a young daughter with his new bride.
Despite getting hit in the head with a frame after telling her the news, Parker does at least get some information. The day before, Thomas had been with her and their baby when he got spooked and ran off. It turns out that he had seen his brother-in-law’s car. This is his first wife Olive’s brother, and he knew he was caught at this point.
At first, it looks like he is responsible until Kasie gets a partial DNA hit on the murder weapon. To get a confession, Parker and Dr. Grace Confalone speak to Olive, who admits to confronting her husband, which led to his death.
Overall, the case wasn’t anything major and was mainly a gateway for leading to Torres and Knight going to Hawaii. Tim got to provide some sort of closure for a grieving father and we got to see Fornell bond with someone else grieving for their daughter. Hopefully we continue to see Fornell through his grieving process even though he was mainly a connection through Gibbs.
The episode also hinted at a romance between Kasie and Piper, one of the tech trolls down in the cyber unit. Getting to see Kasie joyful and happy after a rough few weeks, especially after being poisoned, was a nice treat.
