After Spider-Man 3 raked in $151.1 million during its opening weekend on May 4, 2007, all eyes are on Sony’s plans for Spider-Man 4. The future of the franchise is as up in the air as our web-slinging hero soaring through the streets of New York, but director Sam Raimi is adamant it would be nearly impossible for him to make a fourth film without Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst as the film’s leads.

In his first interview since the film’s release, director Sam Raimi candidly told MTV News that while Sony is clearly interested in furthering the Spider-Man franchise; however, he can’t imagine pursuing another film without a compelling story and his key players back in the film’s lead roles.

"“Sony Pictures is going to be making many more Spider-Man pictures. I just don’t know what [my] future holds yet. If I can’t find the right story that would work for me and that I could tell really well, I would like someone else to tell that story,” he told MTV News adding, “It would be really hard for me to make a movie without Tobey and Kirsten playing the two leads.”"

It is hard to imagine Spider-Man 4 happening without Maguire, Dunst and Raimi returning considering the success of the first three Spider-Man films. Sony has hinted at a fourth film coming, but will the day actually come for a fourth film in the Raimi Spider-Man franchise?

Is Spider-Man 4 happening?

Ever since Spider-Man 3‘s release way back in 2007, fans have been curious to know whether a fourth film from Sam Raimi starring Tobey Maguire might be happening. For more than a decade it looked as though we’d never see Maguire suit up as Spider-Man again; however, that all changed with Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After Maguire reprised his role in the film, fan buzz picked back up and rumors have been running rampant regarding a follow-up film starring the original Spidey. While nothing has been confirmed at this time, there are a lot of rumors suggesting a fourth film could happen.

A recent rumor suggests Sony is exploring revisiting the Raimi trilogy with a potential fourth film starring Maguire, possibly with a unique twist. As Giant Freakin Robot recently reported, rumor has it Sony is considering an animated Spider-Man 4 starring Maguire done in the style we saw in the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

Of course, we’ll have to wait to see what Sony might have in store for the Spider-Man franchise, but the future is looking bright for Spider-Man and his fans.
