Will there be a season 9 of Black-ish? (Has the show been canceled?)
By Sabrina Reed
Black-ish has warmed the hearts of viewers since 2014. The ABC sitcom, which follows the Johnson family, is a comedy staple for the network. It’s also a veteran show that’s been a conversation starter for nearly a decade.
Season 8 of the series draws to a close tonight, April 19, at 9 p.m. ET. The episode titled, “Homegoing,” would have set-up Old-ish, the spin-off series about Pops and Ruby that wasn’t greenlit. The eldest members of the Johnson family are set to move away in the episode, and it has Bow and Dre wondering if they, too, should make a big life change.
Fans will definitely need their tissues on hand with this season ending episode. But can they expect to see more of the Johnsons in a ninth season? Here’s what we know!
Is Black-ish season 9 happening?
No, there won’t be a ninth season of Black-ish. “Homegoing” is the series finale of the show. This isn’t due to a cancellation. Season 8 was announced as the finale season of Black-ish back in 2021. This, however, won’t be the last that fans will see of the Johnson family.
Grown-ish has been renewed for a fifth season on Freeform. Marcus Scribner will join the cast in season 5, reprising his role as Andre Johnson, Jr. Like Yara Shahidi’s character, Zoey Johnson, he’ll be navigating new found young adulthood away from home. With freedom from parental supervision will, of course, come both trials and tribulations as he figures out the direction he’d like his life to go in.
It’ll be a new era for Grown-ish when the new season slots into the network’s 2022-2023 TV season. With Scribner’s addition to the cast, we expect the series to explore new storylines and experiences when it comes to coming-of-age.
