Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated Oppenheimer has already begun production. This comes on the heels of the disappointing box office of Nolan’s last filmTENET. Now, $363 million worldwide is nothing to sneeze at, but considering the $200 million budget, and being one of the first films to make it’s debut during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was disappointing.

Oppenheimer takes a look at the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb.” Not much more is known about the fine details about the plot, but the development of the atomic bomb is expected to be at the center of the story.

Here’s what to know about Christopher Nolan’s twelfth feature film.

Does Oppenheimer have a release date?

Although not official, the expected release date is July 2023. We’ll update when production shares the official release date for the film.

When does Oppenheimer start filming?

Oppenheimer is already in production! Several photos have already been released from the set.

Is Oppenheimer based on a book?

Yes! Based on, ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,’ Nolan himself will pen the screenplay.

Oppenheimer cast updates

This cast is looking to employ half of Hollywood. I say that in jest, but it’s one of the largest ensembles of names of note in recent memory. The confirmed cast so far include: Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Devon Bostick, Josh Peck, Rami Malek, Gustak Skarsgard, Michael Angarano, Jack Quaid, Jason Clarke, Josh Hartnett, Olivia Thirlby, Alex Wolff, David Dasmalchian, Benny Safdie, Matthew Modine, and James D’Arcy, whom all round out this star-studded cast.

Other Nolan news

Nolan has left Warner Bros. for Universal with the promise of an extended theatrical window. Nolan has always been a proponent of the theatrical experience, and wants to continue that spirit with this move.
