The Resident Season 5 brought Devon and Leela’s relationship to an end. Why did they break up, and is there hope of them getting back together?

Caution: There are spoilers from The Resident Season 5, Episode 20 in this post.

As one relationship went to the next level, another came to an end. Bell and Kit took the plunge and got engaged. It didn’t start off as the most romantic moment, but it ended off as a great one with both at a restaurant proposing to each other. Aww.

The relationship to come to an end was Devon and Leela. This is something that has been on the cards for a while, and it doesn’t look like there’s a way to save their love.

Why did Devon and Leela break up in The Resident?

Leela doesn’t want children. She doesn’t think she’s ever going to want them. When Devon offered to be Padma’s sperm donor, it really shook Leela. She realized this mean that Devon wanted children, and it wasn’t something that she could offer him.

Of course, Devon does want a traditional family. There’s nothing wrong with him wanting that. At the same time, there’s nothing wrong with Leela not wanting to be a mother. However, one thing is clear. The two aren’t compatible.

While a lot of things in a relationship can be compromised, having children isn’t one of them. Either the one who wants a child has to live a life without one, or the one who doesn’t want a child has to deal with a child they don’t necessarily want.

We’ve seen this storyline come up in Grey’s Anatomy. In fact, it eventually broke Cristina and Owen up, although it should have been something that ended their relationship in the first place. There just isn’t a way to compromise on the topic that is fair to both people in the relationship (and fair to a child potentially brought into that relationship).

Devon and Leela have made a mature decision in breaking up. It hurts, especially when they love each other. There’s just no way around this. They’re both better off finding someone who wants what they each want, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I think putting the two back together with one of them compromising on children would be terrible writing. Give those who are in this very real situation see that breaking up is often the best thing to do, and is very permanent.
