During The Resident Season 5, we lost Nic in a devastating way. Emily VanCamp is returning for the Season 5 finale, but how will it work?

When we learned Emily VanCamp was leaving The Resident after four seasons, we were disappointed. We also knew there was only one way to write out her character, Nic. With the development of Conrad and Nic’s story, the only option was to kill Nic off.

That makes an exit rather permanent for a medical drama. Yet, we’ve found out that VanCamp will return to The Resident Season 5 for the finale. How is that going to be possible?

TVLine shared the details when announcing Nic would return. We’ll get to see her through a series of flashbacks, and they’ll all be set in one night shortly after Gigi’s birth. This is a magical time for a lot of parents. It’s also a terrifying and exhausting time.

The flashbacks are to help Conrad move on. He is currently stuck in the past when it comes to romance. He’s not ready to find love elsewhere, but that can only go on for so long. It’s time for him to find love elsewhere, whether it’s with Billie or Cade, who are the two most likely options at this time.

To be able to do that, Conrad needs to feel like he can move on without feeling guilty. Would Nic hate him for choosing to be with someone else? That’s something the flashbacks are going to tell us.

We still don’t know if there’s going to be a sixth season of the medical drama. That’s something we’re keeping an eye on as FOX makes its final decision in the coming weeks.
