Bob’s Burgers: Sauce Side Story was sweet and sour
Holidays are a big deal on Bob’s Burgers. The show always manages to nail it when it comes to the holiday episodes, especially the bigger holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
However, Bob’s Burgers doesn’t just celebrate the big holidays. The show also features some of the lesser-featured holidays including St. Patrick’s Day and Mother’s Day. Of course with Linda Belcher as a mother, what’s not to love?
Even so, Mother’s Day for Linda usually ends up in disaster. Most of the time, the disaster isn’t her doing but Linda still has yet to have a truly stress-free holiday. Maybe season 12 will finally do the trick, but it’s unlikely. Either way, the Belchers always try to make Linda feel loved and appreciated which is what the day’s all about.
If you haven’t watched the Season 12 episode, “Sauce Side Story,” then there will be spoilers from this point on.
Here’s what you missed on Bob’s Burgers episode, “Sauce Side Story.”
The episode begins with the family aside from Linda getting ready for her Mother’s Day breakfast and she comes in to share some pictures of her grandmother. She starts to explain a previous family feud that started with Linda’s great-grandmother’s brothers in which one bought the other’s dream house after marrying a rich woman. After he buys the house, he invites his family over and Tony “accidentally” stabs Joey with his fork, causing an even bigger disagreement. It caused a huge rift between the family resulting in a team Tony and Team Joey debacle.
Of course, Linda also shares that the team Joey side of her family is the one with the bolognese recipe that she’s been desperately wanting. Louise hatches a plan to go find the recipe and cook it for Linda, but the only person she can find is Linda’s cousin, Lorraine. It only gets worse from there as Gayle’s the only one who can drive them there.
Gayle shares another incident in which Lorraine wore white to their grandmother, Gloria’s wedding and Gloria got her back by spilling punch on her and punching her back. Once they get to the house, they’re greeted by Lorraine’s son, Nico who is easily distracted so they’re able to look for the recipe and eventually, find a recipe box but not before Lorraine gets home. When Lorraine finds out who they are, she’s clearly angry and wants to know their intentions.
They keep trying to leave but Lorraine won’t stop offering Gayle chicken and when she reaches over to get it, Nico puts his hand out, causing her to accidentally stab him. When Gayle goes to pick up the fork, the recipe box falls out of her fanny pack. Before they leave, Louise explains that they wanted to get the recipe for Linda and Lorraine says that they don’t have it. Eventually, they realize that the recipe was accidentally given to Goodwill. Even though they didn’t get it, Linda is still touched by their efforts and the kids all tell Linda to grow up and get over the feud.
Bob’s Burgers “Sauce Side Story” gave us some sweet and sour moments
Ultimately, the entire plot of the episode was pretty adorable. The Belcher kids are trying to do everything they can to make Linda’s Mother’s Day special. While the kids can be difficult at times, it’s clear they do care about Linda and want her to have a happy Mother’s Day. As nice as the sentiment is, the episode kind of falls flat.
For an episode centered around Linda, the show didn’t do a great job of actually celebrating Linda and making her the center of attention. It was honestly a little bit confusing as the episode felt like it was focused more on the kids. While that isn’t a bad thing, the episode just didn’t have the same oomph that the other holiday episodes have.
Surprisingly, this is a rare miss when it comes to Bob’s Burgers holiday episodes. Honestly, it’s a little bit disappointing. However, the show hasn’t had as much time when it comes to Mother’s Day episodes so maybe this one is a fluke. Either way, the show can only go from this point so that’s something to be excited about.
Even if you didn’t love the episode, it did show a bit more of Linda and her family’s past which is something we rarely see. Hopefully, we’ll get to learn more as the show progresses. Regardless, not all episodes can be winners and this one was a rare miss for me.
Bob’s Burgers airs Sundays on Fox at 9/8c.
