NBC’s The Voice is no stranger to coach shake ups. Over its 21-season run, the television series had different coaches in the chair. So really compared to other competition shows, it’s not surprising when we see the news that one celebrity coach has replaced another in a new season.

One of the shake ups for season 22 is the return of Gwen Stefani, who is taking her seat back as one of four coaches from Ariana Grande. There wasn’t a reason given for Grande’s exit, but there usually isn’t one. Like I said, this is the norm for the singing competition series.

While Stefani is a coach alum, there’s someone new headed to the show to lend their singing expertise.

Who’s replacing Kelly Clarkson on The Voice?

Singer Camila Cabello is taking a seat on The Voice season 22. The singer will serve as one of the coaches along with Stefani and returning coaches Blake Shelton and John Legend.

That means Cabello is taking over for Kelly Clarkson, who has been on the competition series since season 14. Many coaches have gone and come back, so it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve seen the last of Clarkson on The Voice. There was no reason given for her exit. Clarkson does have her own daytime talk show on the network, The Kelly Clarkson Show. So she may have wanted to focus more of her time on that.

Cabello is a good choice as she’s been right in the contestants’ shoes. She got her breakthrough as one of the members of Fifth Harmony, a band formed on The X-Factor (U.S.). Though the group didn’t win, they went on to become stars. Cabello also found success as a solo artist when she left the group.

Last season, she served as an advisor with Legend to help guide his team. Maybe at that point the show was testing the waters to see if she would be a good fit. Or perhaps Cabello expressed interest in being a coach if a seat ever freed up. Whatever it is, we’re about to see her mentor some aspiring singers!

The Voice Season 22 premieres this fall on NBC. Episodes will be streamed on Peacock the next day.
