After the cliffhanger that the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian left us with back in 2020, fans were left speculating what would be next to come in the series’ future. Here’s everything we know about The Mandalorian season 3 so far.

While we never received concrete details from Lucasfilm at the time, we can now piece together a couple of things to expect for the next season of the hit Disney+ show.

The Mandalorian season 3 release date predictions

Update: May 26, 2022 – The official Star Wars Twitter account has announced that The Mandalorian season 3 will premiere in February 2023.

The exclusion of an update on The Mandalorian season 3 on the earnings call from The Walt Disney Company gave off the impression that the new season wouldn’t be coming anytime soon as Disney seemed to be prioritizing other projects.

However, a new feature from Vanity Fair highlighting the upcoming Star Wars projects including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, and Ahsoka has provided us with a ballpark in when Lucasfilm plans to have the new season of The Mandalorian drop. According to the article, The Mandalorian season 3 is expected to premiere on Disney+ in late 2022 or early 2023.

Carl Weathers, who plays Greef Karga, took to Twitter back in March following the completion of filming, so the timetable of the reported release date seems to add up. Weathers, who also directed the 4th episode in the season 2, titled “Chapter 12: The Siege”, has confirmed that he be will directing at least one episode this coming season as well.

On the contrary, when appearing on Peacock’s The Rich Eisen Show last month, Moff Gideon actor Giancarlo Esposito stated how he believes the season premiere was set for release this summer.

"I got a few things in regard to that to do to put some finishing touches on what I do, but I believe it’ll be sometime this summer. No date set yet, but coming soon.”"

In Esposito’s defense, actors are often left in the dark when it comes to the details behind these secretive projects. Additionally, Disney+ often shuffles its release dates to ensure multiple shows don’t overlap with each other in an effort for each series to get its own time in the spotlight.

The summer release date since has been claimed by the Diego Luna-led Andor series, so fans can expect season 1 of Andor this summer and season 3 of The Mandalorian in late 2022 to early 2023.

The Mandalorian Season 3 story beats

The post-credit scene of the season two finale announced The Book of Boba Fett and while some casual viewers may have just looked at the post-credit scene and skipped over the series as a whole, it’s actually crucial that The Mandalorian viewers catch up on The Book of Boba Fett before diving into season three, as it will definitely pick up where that series left off.

The Book of Boba Fett is so important to the storyline of The Mandalorian that the series has even been jokingly called “The Mandalorian season 2.5″ by critics and fans.

It is interesting yet questionable that Lucasfilm decided to use a completely separate series to reveal the next part of a fascinating storyline that was expected to be continued and expanded upon in the future of The Mandalorian.

Spoilers for The Book of Boba Fett ahead.

For a viewer who skipped over Boba Fett, they would be completely confused as to why Grogu has suddenly chosen to forgo his Jedi training with Luke Skywalker and has reunited with Din — when the last time they saw the character in The Mandalorian he was seen having his farewell with Din and on his way to train with Luke. Viewers would also be confused as to why Mando is suddenly flying around in a brand-new ship.

Instead of the speculation fans had prior to The Book of Boba Fett’s release that Mando would be going on his own quests for season three, it’s now been revealed that Grogu indeed will be coming along for all the adventures in the show’s future.

The Mandalorian season 3 cast

Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Espositio, and Carl Weathers are all confirmed to return. Based on the events of The Book of Boba Fett, we can expect to see Temuera Morrison, Ming-Na Wen and possbly even Timothy Olyphant return as well. It also remains to be seen what the absence of Gina Carano from this season means for her character Cara Dune.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, joining the cast this season is legendary actor Christopher Lloyd. So far not much is known about his role, so it remains to be seen just exactly how much screen time Lloyd is slated to get.
