Arcane: League of Legends is a creative story

The Netflix original series‘ story is based around the concept of “polar opposites” and the consequences when they merge.

Arcane takes place in between the city of Piltover and its counter part, the Undercity. Piltover is a prosperous civilization that focuses its reach on politics and science. The Undercity, however, is a forgotten underground district, where back-room deals are the currency for survival and the authority are the citizens themselves.

Another component of the story is science and magic. Science has given Piltover power and recognition. With it, politicians and citizens have benefited from the wealth and prosperity it has created. By the same token, in the Undercity, science is becoming a powerful tool with the creation of a liquid drug called shimmer.

However, a new factor is introduced that merges and ruins, both worlds, magic. An ancient teaching that is able to create anything the imagination desires. As Piltover tries to harness its powers to create further advances, the magic falls in Undercity and creates a ripple effect that destroys the world above, just as the one below.

One of the show’s strengths is its ability to tie every character, and their actions, to the circumstances of the world through consequences. Arcane follows the story of Vi, and Powder (Jinx), two sisters left orphans by a war between Piltover and Undercity. After the conflict, both sisters were adopted by Vender, who now controls the Undercity through an unofficial deal with Piltover’s officials. Vi and Powder lived in Undercity since under Vender’s protection but scarred from the scenes of that day.

The Arcane League of Legends plot is fantastic

Arcane League of Legends is the example of a show where writers are not afraid to take a set table and turn it on itself. Instead of presenting an antagonists as the “bad guy” with “bad intentions”, the shows allows for interpretation and understanding of everyone involved. Even to the last episode, the antagonist revealed as a victim of the circumstances of the world. This gives birth to the real enemy, Powder, better known and Jynx.

To turn the protagonist upside down is complex, yet fantastic writing . Usually, character development involves taking the protagonists through some ups and downs. But, ultimately, making her empathetic and more righteous. In this case, the character with purest of intentions is corrupted with no way of return. A transition of this magnitude isn’t possible without the involvement of other characters and their actions that directly, and indirectly affect the transition. Arcane even goes as far as showing that even the antagonist’s actions, however amoral, were justified. This sort of writing and build-up not only allows for the involvement of all characters, but also for development in future seasons.

Arcane League of Legends features immersive animation

A large portion of animated show’s catch is, well, the animation. Arcane delivers in spades when it comes to creating an immersive and hyperactive animated world.  The perfect example is the contrast of the two cities. One filled with clear blue skies, golden buildings and a wealthy civilization. The other, a literal underground city, with no sunlight, dirty streets and neon lights. The details depicted in both areas are nothing short of astonishing. Ranging from the light reflection off pieces of gold and armor; to the mold in a corner of a cracked wall in a dark alley.

Additionally, fighting sequences are clean and detailed. Each fight in the show depicts an internal conflict. By doing so, it allows for a more immersive experience of what each character is feeling at the moment, and what he or she is fighting for. The lighting to emphasize the intensity of an attack, the slow motion sequences that dramatize an encounter, and, of course, the blood make this a joy to watch. Arcane acts as the perfect medium between a modern animated series and Anime by implementing all of these factors.

The show takes twists and turns which make it intriguing to watch. It involves everything from revenge and violence, to love and regret. But most importantly, it allows for further growth of the story. All of these factors are what make Arcane League of Legends a must-watch.
