What is the series Black Bird on Apple TV+ about?

Television streamers constantly have an abundance of new shows for us fans to enjoy, and Apple TV+ is adding another to its roster! Black Bird premieres July 8.

The upcoming psychological thriller is developed, written, and executive produced by Dennis Lehane with series lead, Taron Egerton, serving as one of the executive producers. The series also stars Ray Liotta, paul Walter Hauser, Greg Kinnear, and Sepideh Moafi.

This was Liotta’s final television role. The actor passed away in his sleep on May 26, 2022 at 67 years old. He’s known for his movies Goodfellas and Field of Dreams.

The limited series has a total of six episodes, with the first two being released on premiere day. So what can we expect to see in the new drama?

What is the series Black Bird on Apple TV+ about?

Black Bird is based on the true crime memoir, In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, by authors James Keene and Hillel Levin. Keene also serves as an executive producer on the Apple TV+ series.

The story is inspired by true events and follows Jimmy Keene (Egerton). He is the son of a high school football hero and decorated policeman, Big Jim Keene (Liotta). Jimmy is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison and gets offered a choice.

He can either serve out his sentence with no parole, or befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Hauser) in a maximum security prison for the criminally insane. The goal is for Jimmy to get a confession out of Larry to reveal where he’s hid the bodies of several young girls before his appeal goes through. The question the show raises: is the suspected killer telling the truth or just making up a tale?

Black Bird premieres with the first two episodes on July 8 on Apple TV+, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday through Aug. 5.
