So You Think You Can Dance season 17 narrowed the competition down from 42 dancers to 12. It wasn’t an easy job for judges tWitch, JoJo Siwa, and Matthew Morrison to do, but thanks to Mandy Moore’s choreography, they were able to put these dancers to the test.

While the rigors of the elimination process looked different this season–as long time fans know the Dance Academy portion was cut (likely due to Covid)–the dancers still had to prove themselves. It’s not enough in this competition to be talented, you also have to show your ability to dance other styles and still standout among the group.

To the tune of a dance mix cover of “I Wanna Dance (With Somebody Who Loves Me) by Whitney Houston, the contestants battled it out in three rounds to grab a coveted spot in the next leg of the competition.

Who made it to the Top 12 and competed on the main stage? Here’s what we know including the pairs that were selected!

So You Think You Can Dance season 17 Top 12 dancers and pairs

  • James and Virginia
  • Jordan and Waverly
  • Anna and Beau
  • Thiago and Essence
  • Carter and Ralyn
  • Keaton and Alexis

In episode 5 of the season, “Dancers Dozen,” the pairs went head-to-head, showcasing their partnership and their skill for the first time on the main stage. In the packed hour which included the introduction of new judge Leah Remini (who replaced Matthew Morrison), the Top 12 reveal, the announcement of pairs, and celebrity well wishes celebrating the 300th episode of So You Think You Can Dance, viewers were treated to challenging routines paired with impeccable music.

At one point, it even seemed like the Top 12 would soon become the Top 10 in a nail biting last few minutes of the show that was ultimately meant to keep the audience and the dancers on their toes. No one went home, so we expect cuts to be coming for these dancers in the next episode.
