Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 5 recap: The force has never been stronger
By Ricky Valero
Last week’s episode was solid, but I am looking for Obi-Wan Kenobi to ramp it up as we hit the home stretch of the series. Let’s dive into episode 5.
The episode begins with a throwback of Obi-Wan and Anakin dueling with lightsabers, and everyone watching is eternally freaking out. Next, we see Darth Vader talking to Reva, and he officially names her Grand Inquisitor as they move to hunt down where Obi-Wan is.
Vader orders the rebel base to head for lockdown while Reva uses Lola (Leia’s gadget she hacked) to close the roof and trap everyone inside. Reva makes a move and alerts everyone that they are officially trapped, which causes an uproar. Obi-Wan says he knows that Vader will not be patient, and someone asks how he knew, and we get another flashback of Anakin and Obi-Wan dueling with lightsabers, and Anakin is highly aggressive.
Obi-Wan gives a speech and breaks down what everyone needs to do for them to get out before the Order gets inside to kill them all. Roken attempts to open the hanger but is unable to, so Leia speaks up and says she’ll get up there and open the door while everyone objects. Obi-Wan steps up and says he trusts her.
Obi-Wan gets a message from the senator that if he doesn’t hear from him soon, he will head to look after young Luke himself. Next, we hear the story of why Tala joined the rebellion. Finally, the stormtroopers begin to break down the walls, and the rebels slowly run out of time to evacuate. Obi-Wan promises to delay them as long as he can.
Obi-Wan Kenobi continues to be a strong series
Reva and Obi-Wan meet at the wall and go back and forth, and this is where we find out Reva was the little girl in the first episode running when the families were being killed. Her survival only happened because she played dead amongst her classmates. Obi-Wan sees this as an opportunity to talk her into letting him help her.
"Do you really want Anakin dead?"
Reva doesn’t think that Obi-Wan has the same mission in mind in ending Anakin once and for all. She also questions his whereabouts and why he didn’t save them during the entire slaughter. Reva is becoming one of my favorite characters in the Star Wars franchise. Each week Moses Ingram puts on an acting show, and it’s impressive.
A battle between the stormtroopers and the rebels ensues as they try to hold them off long enough to get out of there. We see Leia attempting to get the breaker back up and running to get the door opened, and we move back to the fight where Tala and the droid Ned-B take shots, and both go down. Obi-Wan is battling and trying to save her, but she tells him to go and closes the door, and Tala has a bomb-like device that goes off, and she dies. What a moment.
Back to Obi-Wan and Anakin battling, and at this moment, Obi-Wan realizes that he must fight Vader to protect everyone and that he can’t surrender anymore. So Obi-Wan surrenders but tells Reva she’s not bringing him to Vader. Instead, he is bringing Vader to her. We again flashback to the battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin, where Anakin overtakes him, but Obi-Wan tells him that his need for victory blinds him.
Leia gets the roof open to get everyone out of there and escape from Vader and his crew. Vader promises to bring Obi-Wan in himself, and as he hunts him down, the ship is ready to take off, but Vader uses the force to bring the ship back down. Then we’re taken back to the fight between Anakin and Obi-wan, where Obi-Wan overcomes Anakin without his lightsaber and delivers a speech to him about needing to remain focused. The master has outsmarted him one more time.
As Vader stands there, Reva comes from behind with the lightsaber to take down Vader, but he stops her with the force. No matter what Reva tries here, he is one step ahead, and she can’t leave a mark on him. The score in the background here was INCREDIBLE as the two do battle. Composer Natalie Holt did some fantastic work here to make us feel so much as we see the demise of Reva, once and for all.
We are on the ship where everyone escapes when Roken breaks the news that the hyperdrive is down. As Reva is trying to crawl to survive, she finds the communicator that Obi-Wan dropped with the message from the senator. The episode comes to a close when we go to Tatooine where a young Luke is asleep in his bed.
Overall, it was a STRONG episode that answered some questions that were needing to be answered about the entire story. I am excited as we head into the finale.
