Is American Gigolo (2022) a movie or a series on Showtime?

A new project starring actor Jon Bernthal is heading to Showtime very soon! American Gigolo is based on the 1980 film of the same name.

It technically has two premiere dates. The drama drops Friday, Sept. 9, 2022 on the company’s streaming and on demand platforms. It will then premiere on air on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 9 p.m. ET.

Actors Gretchen Mol, Rosie O’Donnell, among others also star alongside Bernthal. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film, will executive produce along with Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed, and Russell Rothberg.

American Gigolo 2022 will be a new series coming to Showtime. There will be a total of eight episodes. New installments will drop Fridays via streaming for Showtime subscribers. Those who want to watch the show on the network’s television channel can do so when the episodes air Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET.

The 1980s neo-noir crime drama was written and directed by Paul Schrader, and starred actor Richard Gere. The film helped establish Gere as a leading man. The movie tells the story about a high-priced gigolo who’s living a lavish and emotionally unattached lifestyle. He becomes romantically involved with a prominent politician’s wife, while becoming the prime suspect in a murder case.

The Showtime series’ reimagined version will follow Julian Kaye (Bernthal), whose been wrongfully imprisoned for 15 years for murder. Now that the former escort is a free man, he has to navigate his complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Mol), his troubled mother, and the people who betrayed him. With Detective Sandy (O’Donnell) looking for the truth about the murder from all those years ago, a much larger conspiracy is unearthed.
