Rap Sh!t, Issa Rae’s new series for HBO Max, drops Thursday, July 21 on the streamer. Though it doesn’t star the Hollywood maven, it does have Rae’s stamp as creator, executive producer, and writer on the premiere and season finale.

The series follows Shawna and Mia, two estranged high school friends who reunite to form a rap group. Rap Sh!t is set in Miami, where the weather is about as hot as its people and their talent. There’s no shortage of artists trying to make a name for themselves. And, the same can be said for those hustling to make ends meet in the city of heat and dreams.

But the show doesn’t only focus on these two women and their musical aspirations. It also spends a lot of time exploring their personal lives and that of the people around them such as Lamont who’s the father of Mia’s daughter. As well as Chastity the Duke (sex worker manager and an up-and-coming promoter), Cliff (Shawna’s long distance boyfriend), and Maurice (Shawna’s co-worker and friend).

Given the fact that Rap Sh!t is centered on the music industry, viewers pretty much know going in that they can expect explorations of sex, drugs, and the culture around hip-hop and rap. But, just how mature is this TV-MA rated series? Here’s what we know!

Rap Sh!t age rating explained

The series contains strong language throughout as well as sexually explicit lyrics. There’s also nudity and strong sexual content in Rap Sh!t. Drug use and alcohol consumption is present.

This is a comedy series, so while heavy topics are discussed like the misogyny in rap, scamming, sex work, and violence, Rap Sh!t is predominately light.  It’s also a quick watch with episodes clocking in at 30 minutes in length. So, if the first two episodes hook you on July 21, you can expect a new episode every Thursday until the season finale drops on Sept. 1.
