In 2001, we all fell head over heels in love with iconic comedy, Legally Blonde! The film really allowed the talented Reese Witherspoon to shine just as bright as Elle Woods, making her one of the most recognized and successful actresses to this day.

The sorority girl turned Harvard Law School student proves to everyone, especially her douche ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III, that she’s not a dumb blonde. Elle makes her way through law school with the help of her self-confidence and fashion and beauty knowledge.

Though it’s been years since we first met the pink-loving fashionable gal, the character and film are still talked about to this day. In the age of reboots, revivals, and sequels, of course there’s talks in possibly creating another installment in the Legally Blonde franchise.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a third film got the green light back in 2018 with a planned release date of Valentine’s Day 2020. Then due to the pandemic, like many productions, the movie was pushed to 2022. But now it’s been delayed indefinitely, which has fans asking if the sequel is still in the works.

Is Legally Blonde 3 still happening?

According to the Elle Woods actress herself, work on Legally Blonde 3 is still underway! In an interview with USA Today, Witherspoon shared that the third movie is still happening if it “comes together in the right way.” Here’s what she had to say:

"It’s just like Top Gun. They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it. So definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people (back) then. I feel like these characters are my friends, so I safeguard them. I would never make the subpar, mediocre version of their story."

As a fan it’s hard to keep waiting! The iconic Harvard student is such a beloved character that we’d all love to see more of. But I do appreciate that the actress and writers want to make sure they take the time to make it right.

Some of the reboots and sequels have worked, but many of them just don’t. Nothing will compare to the original you initially fall in love with. But if the creative team can take the time to try and make it right, then the payoff will be worth the wait!
